Each year, thousands of U.S. children go to hospital emergency rooms with injuries associated
with playgrounds. Most injuries occur when a child falls from the equipment onto the ground.
Many injuries can be prevented by providing a protective ground covering under the equipment.
Mulch is one of the accepted products to help cushion the fall.
EcoPro has a wide variety of mulches, with the most popular for playgrounds being Soft One.
Soft One is a Certified Engineered Wood Fiber that will help reduce the impact of a fall. Soft
One meets the American Standard for Testing and Material (ASTM) Specification for the Impact
Attenuation and Wheelchair Accessible as required by the American Disability Act (ADA). Soft
One can help protect children from injury while enhancing the appearance of the playground.
- Make sure surfaces around playground equipment have at least 12 inches of
cushion-material, such as mulch or wood chips.
- Make sure play structures more than 30 inches high are spaced at least 9 feet apart
- Check for dangerous hardware like open “s” hooks or protruding bolt ends.
- Check for sharp point or edges on equipment.
- Carefully supervise children on playgrounds to make sure they’re safe.
- Check regularly to see that equipment and servicing are in good condition.
